Sandy Camping on the Wisconsin

Photo escape: A sandy campsite on the Lower Wisconsin River

Sandy Camping on the Wisconsin

Our sandy campsite on the Lower Wisconsin River. Absolutely lovely!

Last summer, I canoe camped for the first time. We paddled along the lower Wisconsin River for most of the day stopping to swim and have lunch along the way. One of the most notable qualities of this river is prevalence of gold sand beaches along not its only banks, but also covering the islands in the middle of the river.

At the end of the day, we pitched camp on one of these islands for the night. Acres of sand extended up from the river daring us to try to stay tidy. It was by far the most persistent sand I’ve encountered, working its way into everything. And yes, inevitably it ended up everywhere…there was no stopping that gold sand! I think I was still finding it in my things a week later. Regardless of the sand, the campsite was lovely and we enjoyed the most stunning sunsets I’d seen in years.

  1. I just drove over a Wisconsin River bridge yesterday and for the first time in a long time the river is not iced over. In less than a month I will be fishing on it and within two months I hope to be up there camping weather permitting.

  2. I am yet to go Canoe camping but this summer I’m headed up to Ontario for either a 3 or 5 night canoe camp trip that I am more than excited for!
    Cheers!
